A little about me…
Katy Vandruff, LPC
I have always been drawn to helping others with the belief that everyone deserves to feel heard and supported in this life, no matter what they are experiencing. I grew up in Dallas, TX, and as a child, I found myself as the “peacemaker” in my friendships and family, helping sort out conflict and wanting fairness for all. My parents often pointed out my empathetic nature (did anyone else cry when they watched Tarzan…? Just me?). I had a curiosity about the different ways we live, think, and feel as humans and questioned what makes us who we are. As a teen, when my family experienced our own grief and loss through the deaths of several loved ones, I attended family counseling where I found comfort and a space to feel my feelings. It was also through this experience that I realized my personality and strengths may align with a career in counseling.
I went on to attend undergrad at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, TX, where I received my Bachelor of Science in Psychology in 2016. I then received my Master of Science in Counseling from East Texas A&M University in 2018, with an emphasis in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. During my Masters program, I spent a year providing counseling services at a community college counseling center in Dallas, where I supported young adults and adults in areas related to depression, anxiety, school/career stress, relationship issues, grief and loss, among other areas. At the start of 2020, I began my post-masters journey to become a Licensed Professional Counselor.
Prior to becoming an LPC, I spent several years working in youth ministry and non-profit settings in various positions, centered on supporting the adolescents and young adults in their development and wellbeing. These opportunities gave me first-hand experience in addressing and understanding many of the challenges impacting youth and young adults today and further shaped my passion for working with these populations.
I recently moved back to the Dallas area with my husband and our golden retriever, Sadie, after living in Austin for the past 5 years. In my free time, I enjoy sipping lattes, eating Tex Mex, going on walks or hikes, spending time with friends and loved ones, and cozying up on the couch to watch a show or read.
